By Lt. Jeff Botbyl

Passaic County is located in the upper northeastern portion of New Jersey. Passaic County is a diverse area which ranges from city and suburban areas to rural areas in the northern most portion. Passaic County is approximately 185 square miles and consists of approximately 247 miles of County roadways. The total population of Passaic County is approximately 498,357.Passaic County Sheriff's Department Motorcycle Unit

Major roadways in Passaic County include Route 3, Route 46, Route 21, Interstate 80 and Interstate 287. Most highways in Passaic County are main thoroughfares to New York City.

The Passaic County Sheriff's Department Motorcycle Unit began with three motors in 1989. We currently have 10 Harley Davidson FLHPI motorcycles in service operated by 1 Lieutenant, 1 Sergeant, 2 Corporals and 6 Officers. The officers in the unit ride year round unless the ground is covered with snow and ice. If the roadways are clear the motors are in service. All Motor Officers are required to attend and successfully complete the Maryland State Police Motorcycle School. Five Officers are certified Maryland State Police Motorcycle Instructors. We train once a month and riders must re-certify yearly. The two-week basic operators course begins with slow cone maneuvers and increases in complexity and speed as the course progresses. Safety and defensive riding tactics are stressed throughout training. Students are also brought onto the firing range for live fire training exercises. Motorcycle Officers are trained and provide dignitary motorcade escorts and funeral escorts. We take great pride in our appearance and ability to conduct escorts in a professional and respectful manner regardless of who is in the motorcade.

The Motorcycle Unit also operates the Passaic County Sheriff's Department Aggressive Driving Task Force. The Task Force focuses on designated areas utilizing Motorcycles and non-traditional Police vehicles such as a Mustang GT and Mercury Marauder. Officers utilize laser and radar equipment.

Our primary assignment is traffic enforcement. We are deployed throughout the County to enforce safety related traffic complaints. The Motorcycle Units goal is to facilitate and promote the safe movement of traffic throughout Passaic County and assist any Law Enforcement Agency as needed. We are also assigned to approximately 350 special details throughout the year which include, parades, motorcycle runs, marathons, dignitary escorts and other escorts.
