Red-light cameras paying off at the bank for Gardena - Gardena, CA
The system is activated when a vehicle trips sensors in the road about 8 feet before the intersection begins.

And the cameras are activated if the car is going too fast to stop for the red light, said police assistant Yecenia Correa, who reviews the videos and photos before tickets are sent to violators.

A camera will record video for about six seconds, in addition to taking photos.

"If you're in the crosswalk, we'll reject it," Correa said.

Already 25 percent of the photo tickets are rejected, said Sgt. Thomas Kang, the program's supervisor. He said the city's policy is to give citizens the benefit of the doubt.

Redflex downloads to Gardena police computers the video and four photos that show the driver's face, the vehicle license plate, the position of the vehicle and the color of the light. Images will be accessible online at the Police Department for alleged violators to review.

"This is a great deterrent and it frees us up to do other things," said motorcycle officer Victor Gomez, who works with the program....     Read the full story.

"She got away with it, so I decided I wanted to catch criminals," said Knight.

That was the day white California Highway Patrol motorcycle Officer Lee Minikus pulled over 21-year-old Marquette Frye, who was black, at Avalon Boulevard and 116th Street on suspicion of drunk driving. They scuffled and a large crowd gathered.

The ensuing confrontation between police and residents expanded into six days of rioting that resulted in 34 deaths, more than 1,000 injuries and $40 million in property damage....     Read the full story.

Traffic officers at school zones: As classes start, police step up speed patrols - Phoenix, AZ
...In Phoenix, about 150 motorcycle officers will patrol school zones surrounding nearly 2,000 schools.

And they aren't cutting motorists any slack. At 7:30 a.m. one morning last week near Seventh Avenue and Vineyard Road, Phoenix motorcycle Officer Mike Warren eyed a driver going a bit too fast.

"Got her," he said, tucking away his radar gun before pulling the woman over across the street from Lassen Elementary School.

Codiac RCMP take to the streets on two wheels: Motorcycle patrol gives police a new public image - Moncton, New Brunswick
CHiPs fans will no doubt be thrilled to see Codiac RCMP has brought the police motorcycle back to the streets of Moncton.

Not since the days of the Moncton Police Department have the city's streets been patrolled by officers on motorcycles, but that changed July 1. Codiac now has a BMW motorcycle on patrol, being used by Constables Dave Hale and Margot Estabrooks.

So far, the reaction has been good.

"Dave was telling me people are waving and whistling at him," says spokesman Const. Michel Mercier, with a laugh.

Mercier jokes that they're going to start calling him Dave Estrada, after Eric Estrada, who played Ponch on the NBC show about the California Highway Patrol that aired from 1977 to 1983.

Police are always looking for new ways to cover the region and Mercier says the Metro Moncton municipalities were receptive to bringing back the motorcycles. He says it's worked well so far.

"We show our colours and get a lot of reaction from the public."

When the Mounties originally took over in Moncton, in 1998, the motorcycle patrol was cancelled because of the cost. This time around the price tag isn't high.

Mercier says the BMW is on loan from Atlantic Yamaha. The RCMP pays to add the emergency light and siren and keeps fuel in the tank. Police get use of the vehicle and the dealership gets advertising through having its product driven around all summer.

Codiac will be adding a second bike in the next couple of weeks, when it gets a Harley Davidson on loan from Toys for Big Boys.

Besides the normal patrols, the bikes will be used at big events like the Atlantic Harley Davidson Rally this month and the Rolling Stones concert over the Labour Day weekend.

Mercier says the machines don't only look good, they also serve a practical purpose....     Read the full story.

'Motor Guys' try to rev up support - Pittsburgh, PA
The driver of a Ford Explorer with an expired registration sticker never saw them coming as he turned from the Smithfield Street Bridge onto Fort Pitt Boulevard.

With engines roaring, two police officers riding Harley-Davidson Road Kings pulled behind the sport utility vehicle and turned on their sirens. The driver peered into his rearview mirror and quickly pulled over. Officers Ray Kain and Ray Strobel parked their bikes, pulled off their gloves and walked to the car.

"They came out of nowhere," said the driver, after handing over his license and registration. He accepted a citation and drove away.

The motorist is among thousands of people who meet the city's Motor Guys, the police who patrol on 800-pound Harleys. It's a job that lets them combine a passion for riding with the duties of enforcing traffic laws. The officers say their work helps the city collect millions of dollars in fines -- and they're hoping that will help them secure their squad's future.

"The bikes are the best community relations tool the city has," said police instructor Sean Pindel. "Nobody really approaches police cars, but they do with the bikes."

The bike squad numbers only 17 -- down from 40 from before the city's financial-recovery plan took effect in 2004. The officers are hoping to recruit more members and solidify their standing on the force when a new mayor takes office next year. They've begun a public relations campaign of sorts to remind City Hall and police brass of their importance....     Read the full story.

Motorcycle officers go with the (traffic) flow - Port Orange, FL
Getting paid to wheel a Harley-Davidson around town all day may appeal to some, but a 10-hour shift on two wheels in summer heat breathing exhaust fumes could deter even the most diehard biker.

Throw in paperwork, criminals and inattentive or intoxicated drivers and you're describing the job of a motorcycle cop.

A team of four Motor Officers and one Motor Supervisor patrols the streets of Port Orange. There are two shifts in the summer but now that school has resumed, it's all hands on deck from 6:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.

Motor Officers receive special duty pay and many use the position for career advancement. Ofc. Rick Vingara, 32, joined the Port Orange Police Department three years ago after a stint as a state correctional officer. The Port Orange resident traded his police cruiser for a Harley in January because, he said, he enjoys working traffic.

Known by fellow officers during his training days as "Sir Dump-a-Lot" because of his tendency to drop his bike, Vingara said he was discouraged after his first two days.

"I couldn't count the number of times I dropped the bike during the training class," he said. "With 14 years of sportbike experience, I thought I knew how to ride."

Sgt. Marko Galbreath, a 16-year POPD veteran and the motor supervisor, conducts the intense 80-hour motorcycle training course over two weeks. Candidates complete a rigorous program of tight turns, performance braking and other maneuvers that make civilian riding seem tame. He said not everyone makes it through the class.

"It's hard to ride something that has a natural resting position on its side," Galbreath said.

One advantage of a motorcycle is maneuverability through traffic snarls. Motorcycle cops often can reach accident scenes more quickly than their four-wheeled counterparts. Motorcycles also seem to go unnoticed among packs of cars, Vingara said, or when sitting by the side of the road as officers monitor traffic....     Read the full story.

Quiet, solemn in aftermath of shooting of officers - Baton Rouge, LA
In front of the house where the shooting occurred at 3634 Capital Heights, dozens of quiet and somber uniformed and plain-clothes police officers are milling about. They’re huddled in small groups, talking to one another.

Two vans and a station wagon from the Coroner’s Office are at the scene, and at least 20 vehicles from different law enforcement agencies are parked near the house and in the neighborhood.

Two Baton Rouge Police motorcycle officers walked up to the yellow crime-scene tape surrounding the area and asked the officer there, “Please, is there anything we can do?”

He checked, and they were told to handle traffic control.

A white fire truck with a red stripe is parked in front of the house. In front of the truck, a blue tarpaulin is set up to shelter from the sun the officers working the case. At least 10 detectives carrying notebooks arrived and appear to be investigating.

Mayor-President Kip Holden is at the scene. When he got there, he embraced Police Chief Jeff LeDuff.

Col. Greg Phares of the Sheriff’s Office said (the shootings) “bring home again in a tragic way what a terrible and dangerous profession this is. It puts people in harm’s way every day.”...     Read the full story.

SFPD traffic patrols aim to protect pedestrians: Drivers ticked, but neighbors thankful - San Francisco, CA
On Thursday morning, five motorcycle police officers line up on the corner of 34th Avenue and Lincoln Boulevard.

A plainclothes officer steps out into a marked crosswalk on Lincoln Boulevard, a four-lane street with no stop signs or traffic signals, as two cars approach from about a block to the west. The officer walks slowly, making eye contact with the drivers to make sure they see him.

When a car doesn't stop, a motorcycle officer peels out into the chilly morning air, lights flashing and sirens screaming as he approaches the vehicle. He flags down the car and slaps the driver with a ticket for not yielding to pedestrians — a violation that carries with it a $155 fine.

The officers are part of a citywide effort, spanning numerous departments, to reduce pedestrian injuries in San Francisco. In 2004 alone, cars killed 21 pedestrians in The City and in 2003, vehicle collisions were the second leading cause of injury deaths in San Francisco, according to a Health Department study....     Read the full story.

MCPD leases motorcycles from Harley Davidson - Mason City, IA
The Mason City Police Department is pulling a page out of its history book.

“From 1915 continuously to the early 1970s, the department had motorcycles of sort,” said Sgt. Greg Scott, who has studied the history of the department. “We’ve also had three wheelers which the department used. But we have not used a motorcycle since the 1970s.”

That changed this summer when the department entered a lease agreement with Harley Davidson of Mason City.

For $1 a year the department is leasing a Harley Davidson Road King Police Pursuit model.

The program, offered by the local dealership, provides the department with the motorcycle and emergency package, which includes sirens and lights.

The department has outfitted the Harley Davidson with additional lighting, radar, a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher and other equipment found in squad cars.

One other interesting visual on the motorcycle comes from the police departments history pages.

An emblem on the side of the gas tanks was designed from a photo taken in 1921.

“It’s the logo they used on vehicles back then,” Scott said. “We changed the C to red, but other than that it’s pretty much the same.”

Scott said the final decision on the emblem was left up to department officers, who voted on the logo.

He said a group of 10 officers have said their interested in patroling on the motorcycle.

Brett Hollander, a day-shift officer, is one of them.

“I have been riding motorcycle for several years and just last spring I bought my first Harley,” Hollander said. “Now I can drive motorcycle to work and while I’m at work.”

Scott said the Harley Davidson will be used in traffic control situations and at larger public function....     Read the full story.

Cops' test proves pedestrians don't have much of a chance - North Las Vegas, NV
Dressed in a T-shirt, shorts and Detroit Lions baseball hat, North Las Vegas Police Sgt. Randy Carter went undercover Tuesday -- as a pedestrian.

Carter was at the center of a traffic law enforcement operation on Lake Mead Boulevard between Tonopah Drive and Martin Luther King Boulevard. His goal was to catch unsuspecting motorists who didn't yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

"This is cake," Carter said, adding that so many drivers didn't yield to him while he walked through the crosswalk that the police couldn't handle the volume of drivers. They cracked down only on the most blatant offenders.

After motorists drove through the crosswalk despite Carter being in it, he signaled several motorcycle officers to pull them over and issue each driver a $190 ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian....     Read the full story.

Hog-wild no more - Cambridge, MA
The all-American, tough-guy image of a cop on a Harley is a thing of the past in Cambridge.

This week, the Cambridge Police Department replaced its 14-motorcycle fleet with sleek, brand-new, BMW motorcycles, putting to rest the department's 12-year loyalty to Harley-Davidson.

"They're both excellent motorcycles," said Lt. Jack Albert. "But after extensive research on our part, the BMWs won out ... it's exciting."

The BMW bikes are more compact than their Harley predecessors, which ranged in age from 2 to 11 years. Albert said high maintenance costs for the maturing Harleys were the overwhelming factor in replacing them.

But others said they were also swayed by the BMW's feel.

"The suspension is a lot more modern and they handle better," said Officer Keith Albert. "They're more responsive to braking and turning."

Though officers in the traffic division ogled the new bikes upon delivery Monday, screwing on their license plates and demonstrating the earsplitting horn and siren for a gaggle of reporters, Albert admitted the German-made motorcycles were a tough sell to some officers....     Read the full story.

Hernandez was found guilty in June of fatally striking Officer John Samra, 41, during a traffic chase in 2003.

James Wilson, Passaic County senior assistant prosecutor, called the case a "tale of two cities." He said the comparison between Wilson and Samra was a stark contrast. Both men were around the same age and grew up in the same area. But Samra was a 15-year veteran of the Clifton Police Department and a former military officer. Officer being kept in drug-induced coma - Culpeper, VA
Officer William “Roscoe” Barnes remained in critical but stable condition Tuesday, two days after being struck by a car while directing traffic for a funeral procession.
