Motorcycle cop loses leg after Route 9W crash - Palisades, NJ
A New Jersey police officer lost his leg today after his motorcycle and a box truck collided while the officer was taking part in a funeral procession

Two other motorcycle officers were injured , Orangetown police said.

The officer who lost his leg was taken by helicopter to the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla after the 2:15 p.m. incident, Orangetown Detective Lt. John McAndrew said.

The other injured officer was taken by ambulance to Nyack Hospital. He suffered a possible broken leg and fractured ribs, McAndrew said.

The Route 9W crash occurred as four police motorcyclists were leading a limousine carrying family members from a funeral, McAndrew said. Two officers were riding behind the limo.

The severely injured officer was in the front near the center line as the group rounded a bend going north.

The truck with New Jersey plates, carrying baked goods, was rounding the bend coming south when the accident occurred, police said.

A second motorcyclist hit the downed the cyclist, injuring his leg and ribs, McAndrew said.

Several other officers suffered scrapes and bruises when they grounded their motorcycles, police said.

"We don't know yet if the (truck) driver veered too far to the left around the bend and crossed the double-yellow line or what exactly happened," McAndrew said.

Orangetown police were interviewing the truck driver. Clarkstown Police Detective Juan Rocha was called in to speak with the driver in Spanish, McAndrew said.

"We're talking to him about his idea of how this occurred," McAndrew said.

As emergency personnel worked on the patients, one mangled motorcycle lay on Route 9W while five more were along the side of the road. Several officers walked around, one with his arm in a sling.

A third officer checked himself into Englewood Hospital in New Jersey.

All the motorcycle officers were from New Jersey departments, wearing their respective uniforms....     Read the full story.

Dallas motorcycle officer killed in Clinton motorcade wreck - Dallas, TX
A veteran Dallas police officer was killed this morning when his motorcycle crashed while he was escorting presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to a campaign rally in south Dallas.

Clinton later cut short her appearance in Fort Worth so that she could return to Dallas to be with the officer's family.

She told a crowd of several hundred people that had gathered outside the Tarrant County courthouse in Fort Worth for her appearance that the rally would be inappropriate and canceled the event.

The motorcycle officer, Victor Lozada, 49, was killed at about 9 a.m. on the Houston Street Viaduct as he was part of Clinton's motorcade.

Clinton learned of the accident after her appearance in Dallas.

"We are just heartsick at this loss of life in the line of duty," a subdued Clinton said in a statement to reporters after the rally.

Shortly after 11 a.m., Clinton was headed back to Methodist Hospital in Dallas where the officer was taken after the accident.

Clinton called Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle expressing her condolences. At 11:55 a.m., she arrived at the hospital to visit Lozada’s family.

“It is important that we respect and appreciate their service,” she said. “I certainly am grateful for all they do for me.”

Lozada, a 20-year-veteran, had four children — two in college, one in high school, and a 10-year-old. He had just started on the motorcycle unit a month ago, said Police Chief David Kunkle.

Lt. Vernon Hale, a Dallas police spokesman, said the wreck happened at 200 S. Houston Street Viaduct.

In a release, Hale said that it appeared Lozada was south bound on the viaduct when he struck a curb, lost control of his motorcycle and crashed. He said Lozada apparently was near the end of the escort team when he crashed. Hale said no other vehicles were involved.

"Traffic investigators will conduct a forensic mapping of the accident scene in an attempt to determine the specific cause," Hale said.

The viaduct, which runs across the Trinity River between downtown Dallas and the Oak Cliff area, was shut down while the accident was investigated and could be closed for several more hours, Hale said.

Shortly after the wreck, television images showed a police motorcycle on its side in the roadway. The officer’s helmet could be seen on the roadway with an orange spray-paint circle around it.

According to reports, the officer was seen lying sideways in the roadway with another officer hovering over and trying to assist him....     Read the full story.
