Impaired drivers will be targeted by police over the holiday weekend - Lewes, DE
...State police statewide will staff many of the additional patrols with troopers usually assigned to administrative positions at headquarters or to special units. “We will do everything in our power to make sure motorists traveling in or through our state return home safely,” said state police Superintendent Col. Motorcops.com Calendar to Benefit Families of Fallen Officers - Dallas, TX
After a year in development, the 2005 Motorcops.com Calendar went on-sale yesterday. The 16-month Calendar features group and individual photographs of police motorcycle units from across the United States and Canada. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Calendar will be donated to Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS).
Concerns of Police Survivors was founded in 1984 to provide healing, love, and life renewed for the surviving families of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. It now serves over 13,000 families nationwide with ongoing survivor support, grief counseling, scholarships and retreats.
"Meeting motorcycle officers around the Country was a great experience," said Mark Kopang, the principal photographer and developer of the Motorcops.com Calendar. "Although many of the officers joke about getting paid to ride a Harley for work" Kopang continued, "they have a very difficult job. I wanted to give something back to those who have given so much. Our goal is to raise $10,000 for COPS."...

Motorcycle cop struck by car - Trenton, NJ
A Trenton motorcycle cop on his way to handle a burglary call was slightly injured yesterday when his Harley Davidson was struck by a vehicle driving eastbound on Perry Street in front of Trenton Fire Department headquarters, said police.
Police said officer Alvin Cadlett, a 21-year veteran of the force, needed eight stitches to close a gash in his wrist as a result of the 5:10 p.m. accident....

Controversy looms over trial in officer's crash death - West Palm Beach, FL
If Sonia Ortiz's attorney gets her way, Ortiz's trial next week will explore much more than her role in the accident that killed West Palm Beach motorcycle officer Thomas Morash on South Dixie Highway.
In order to defend Ortiz, Kristine Rosendahl will try to deflect some of the blame by accusing Morash's co-workers of trying to dodge the trial and even intimidating the single mother of four by skulking around her house and taking pictures of her children while playing in their yard.
She also will try to put Morash, a Port St. Lucie man who left behind a wife and 8-year-old daughter, on trial, saying his driving rather than Ortiz's led to the fatal crash Oct. 17....

Former Chandler Officer Dan Lovelace smiled and kissed his wife and 18-month-old daughter after he was acquitted Friday of second-degree murder for an on-duty shooting that killed an Ahwatukee Foothills mother.

Motorcycle trooper hit by fire truck, suffers broken leg - Seekonk, RI
A state trooper who rode a motorcycle in yesterday's funeral procession for a Marine killed in Iraq was taken to Rhode Island Hospital after the motorcycle and a Taunton fire truck collided.
Trooper Edward J. Lavoie, atop the motorcycle, was dragged about 20 feet. He suffered a broken right leg -- for which he may require surgery today -- along with cuts, and a possible broken collar bone, according to the state police. Lavoie remained at the hospital last night....

Cop a friend even to strangers: Officer's funeral filled with kind words
...Tessier had other plans. More than anything, he told Paisant about five years ago, he wanted to be a motorcycle officer. He loved bikes, knew all about them. But it wasn't until last year that he finally got the chance to apply for a job in the traffic division.
"I gave him a glowing recommendation," Paisant said. Tessier got the job, and several months later Paisant himself moved to the traffic division as commander. The two colleagues were reunited, and longtime friend Scott Zantjer said Saturday that Tessier never seemed happier than he had been in recent months.
It was all right there in a picture someone had taken of Tessier during Carnival this year: him on his motorcycle, in uniform, yet kicked back and looking cool in sunglasses. On Saturday, the picture sat near his casket as people walked by and paid their last respects.
They sobbed when the bagpipes began playing. They wept when Stout and others, including NOPD Superintendent Eddie Compass, spoke. Then they gathered again outside for a 21-gun salute, a moment in front of the motorcycle he loved so much, and then one final trip down the streets he once patrolled.
They were headed for St. Roch Cemetery No. 2, and motorcycles led the way....

A motorcycle officer with the Arlington Police Department was treated and released at Harris Methodist Fort Worth hospital Monday morning after an accident.
Officer Steve Broadstreet was traveling west in the 3300 block of East Division Street when a vehicle pulled out of a RaceTrac service station, hitting Broadstreet's left front fender and sending him over the handlebars of his motorcycle and over the hood of the vehicle, said Sgt. Two Motorcycle Officers Injured After Chase - Los Angeles, CA
A drug suspect in a black Lexus SUV led police on a roughly 40-minute chase Tuesday that ended with two arrests, minor injuries to two motorcycle officers and several vehicles damaged, authorities said.
The pursuit began around 4:30 p.m. at Raitt and Walnut streets in Santa Ana and continued into Costa Mesa, according to NBC4.
Sgt. Zach Hoferitza, of the Costa Mesa Police Department, said a woman at the wheel of the Lexus drove over spike strips, then backed into and knocked down two police motorcycles as officers tried to arrest her near Newport Boulevard and Del Mar Avenue....

Youths' quick thinking helps police nab burglary suspects - Pittsburgh, PA
...A motorcycle officer was dispatched and saw a small red car with two white males matching the description provided by the three youngsters. Also, the car matched the description of one involved in a burglary July 9 on Penn Towne Drive.
The officer began to follow the car east on Route 130 and radioed other units. An off-duty officer heard the transmissions, jumped in his police vehicle and assisted in the pursuit. The suspects were stopped at Lumpy's Country Deli and Pie Shop by the two Penn Township officers and a state police officer....

The Union City man arrested in the hit-and-run crash that killed an Oakland police motorcycle officer has a history of traffic convictions, records show.
Carlos Mares, 37, was driving his white 1996 Freightliner loaded with car batteries about 2:10 p.m. Thursday when his tractor-trailer hit, and then ran over, Officer William "Will" Seuis, authorities said. Bikers generous at law enforcement fund-raiser - Merrillville, IN
More than 300 people turned out and raised $9,000 for the family of a fallen law enforcement officer and other charities at a benefit motorcycle ride Sunday.
The poker-run-style ride was sponsored by the Blue Knights of Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, part of an international fraternal law enforcement bike club founded in 1974. The money raised Sunday will go to the family of slain Indiana State Trooper Scott Patrick, who was killed in the line of duty last year, COPS (Concerns of Police Survivors) and Camp Quality, an Illinois camp for children with cancer....
