Read the full story. 6/28/2004 Parking, traffic tickets go high-tech: Hand-held devices set to come online - New Orleans, LA ...A second set of hand-held computers will be handed out in about 60 days to the city's traffic cops. That second batch of gadgets also will be free to the city thanks to a $500,000 grant from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, a division of the U.S. Department of Justice. They will have a ticket printer and a slot for swiping driver's licenses. Like the traffic computers, they will allow police to instantly print citations rather than writing out a paper ticket. The computers will be linked to a national database of wanted suspects, so an officer will be alerted if the driver of the car is a suspect in a crime. Though police cars already are outfitted with laptop computers, the hand-held devices will give motorcycle cops access to useful databases, said Mark St. Pierre, the project manager for the mayor's Office of Technology who is responsible for the new police computers. In addition, the hand-held systems can be brought right up to the window of a pulled-over car so the officer does not need to return to the squad car to write a ticket.
