Officer and a motorcycle make an impact: One officer and a stealthy, souped-up motorcycle help reduce accident rate in Wasilla - Wasilla, AK
...Wasilla last year opted for a motorcycle cop to reduce the number of wrecks in a city where parking lot after parking lot spews traffic directly onto the Parks Highway. The city counted more than 600 accidents in 2003, and there have only been more driveways, businesses and subdivisions built since then. The intersection of the Parks and Palmer-Wasilla Highway -- already one of the busiest in the Valley -- recently gained a Carl's Jr. and an A&W restaurant as well as a PetZoo store.
Law enforcement officials say motorcycles, with their speed and maneuverability, are huge assets in reducing traffic problems. The Alaska State Troopers use two leased Harleys in Palmer as part of their patrols for drunken drivers....

University police receive motorcycle certification - Minneapolis, MN
Some University and Minneapolis police officers said goodbye to their squad cars Friday at a ceremony in Williams Arena.
The ceremony honored five Minneapolis police officers and one University police officer who received motorcycle certification.
The certification allows the officers to enforce the law using police Harley-Davidson Electra Glide motorcycles.
Scott Olson, one of the program’s training officers, said the motorcycle certification course is a challenge for many officers.
“When (the officers) start off, they feel like they’ve ridden motorcycles for a long time, they think they know how to ride bikes,” Olson said to an audience of family and friends of the newly certified officers.
“They find out the first day that it’s going to be a whole new ball game when they get on these bikes and get out on the course,” he said....

Charges likely to be filed Monday against Moline man - Moline, IL
Illinois law enforcement officials are taking their time in filing charges against a Moline man accused of smashing into squad cars and running a Moline motorcycle officer off the road during a car chase Tuesday.
Charges likely will be filed Monday in Rock Island County Circuit Court against Robert L. Bomar Jr., 19, said Moline police Lt. Jerry Patrick.
Patrick said investigators met Thursday with Rock Island County State’s Attorney Jeff Terronez. He wants detectives to re-interview several bystanders, some of whom were struck, during the chase that spanned the Interstate 74 bridge and ended on Grant Street in Bettendorf, Patrick said....

Police motorcycle units make their debut - Cohasset, MA
In an effort to get police out of their cruisers and more visible to the public, Police Chief Jim Hussey has been able to add two Harley Davidson motorcycles to the department's fleet of vehicles.
The police motorcycles were a hit this past weekend when they escorted the trolleys carrying prom-goers to the town line and provided an escort for Monday's Memorial Day Parade.
But residents with a head for accounting in these tough fiscal times can put down their sharp pencils.
The motorcycles have been leased for a year. The Cohasset Police Association, the private fund-raising arm of the police union, is paying for one of the motorcycles and Hussey is using left-over funds in his cruiser account for the other.
Leasing costs for each bike are $2,800 a year, plus roughly $500 for maintenance, Hussey said....

Long Beach PD returns to motorcycle roots - Long Beach, NY
It happened in a split second, a veteran Long Beach police officer on motorcycle patrol avoiding two children on a bicycle. It had just begun to rain.
Sgt. Martin Bergen spun off his bike that day in the late 1960s. He was in a coma for three weeks and suffered a head injury that led to his departure from the police force on which his father also had served.
In the accident's wake, the Long Beach Police Department stored its motorcycles, and the unit disbanded in 1968.
Now, 37 years later, the department -- in an effort to modernize its 71-member force -- is resurrecting the special unit. Two of the department's patrol officers -- Steven Gumiela and Jose Miguez -- are training with the Nassau Highway Patrol Bureau and are expected to hit the busy streets of the beach community next month.
Among the most enthusiastic supporters of the unit's bittersweet rebirth are the late Bergen's family members. His son, now a Long Beach police officer himself, said that although he did not consider a move to the motorcycle unit, he and his family welcomed its return....

Fired officer loses 3-year battle to get his job back - Chandler, AZ
He killed a woman and cost the city more than $4.6 million. On Monday, fired Chandler police Officer Dan Lovelace lost his three-year battle to get his job back.
Calling it in the best interest of the Police Department and Chandler, City Manager Mark Pentz backed the 5-0 April vote by a city personnel board that recommended against Lovelace's reinstatement. But that doesn't mean the fired cop will never again carry a badge and gun. A ruling in November by the state agency certifying law enforcement officers allows him to keep his credentials and look for work with another police department.
Lovelace, 40, was fired in 2002 after he shot and killed Dawn Rae Nelson, 35, in midafternoon at a Chandler Walgreens drive-through window.
A motorcycle officer at the time of Nelson's death, Lovelace had also been involved in 2000 high-speed chase that led to the death of a college student. The city settled wrongful death lawsuits in both cases....

Motorcycle leases may be considered - Fort Worth, TX
Motorcycle police officers would get increased reimbursements and could eventually drive vehicles leased at the city's expense under a recommendation to help offset officers' costs.
A city report on the police motorcycle program recommends increasing monthly payments to motorcycle officers by more than 8 percent, from $475 to $515 per month for maintenance and fuel, said Susan Alanis, assistant director for the Police Department.
The report, which was presented to the City Council on Tuesday, calls for eventually ending the program of officer-owned motorcycles to allow officers to drive bikes leased by the city.
Motorcycle officers now purchase their own vehicles and receive the monthly stipend. They have asked the city for more money to help with rising fuel and maintenance costs....

A Pennsylvania man and woman were arrested and charged with heroin trafficking after being stopped at the Delaware Memorial Bridge toll plaza here Monday morning, authorities said.
At approximately 9:45 a.m., Delaware River and Bay Authority Police stopped the vehicle in which the couple was riding as a result of the department's Toll Plaza Safety Program, which was initiated earlier this month.
The driver, Derrick Evans, 37 of Stewartstown, Pa., and passenger Alicia Blake, 21, of Airville, Pa., were traveling through the toll plaza when DRBA uniformed police officers stationed in the toll plaza on foot patrol noticed neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt.
Evans ignored the officers command to pull over his 1995 Volkswagen Gulf to the shoulder area and continued traveling south on Interstate 295. A DRBA motorcycle officer followed and stopped the Volkswagen on I-295 near the Route 13 interchange....

"My recommendation is (the bike) is kind of an albatross. Just sign the title over to (Hobart)," Muchow said. "Having a motorcycle in a department this size is like putting pearls on a pig."
