A motorcycle officer described as an outgoing, smiley guy died Wednesday after he was hit along a Rancho Cordova road.

Sacramento County Deputy Lawrence Canfield, 43, was taken to Mercy San Juan Hospital after he was hit at Sierra Madre Court and Coloma Road at about 1:55 p.m.

The 79-year-old driver who hit the officer was detained. At a news conference later in the day, McGinness said it appears Canfield was trying to stop a speeder when another driver made a left turn in front of him.

McGinness told KCRA 3 that it does not appear there was criminal intention involved, and that the driver tried to help Canfield.

The sheriff described Canfield, a 13-year veteran of the department, as "a very, very outgoing, personable, happy sort of guy."

"He absolutely loved what he did," McGinness said. "We know this job is not without its risks."

Canfield, who served in the U.S. Army, had been assigned to the Rancho Cordova Police Department since 2004.

He leaves behind his wife and two children, both of whom are under 10 years old.

Rancho Cordova Officer Dies After Motorcycle Crash - Rancho Cordova, CA
A motorcycle officer was killed after he was struck by a car in Rancho Cordova Wednesday afternoon, according to authorities.

The collision happened on Coloma Road at Chardonnay Drive at 1:55 p.m., said Sacramento County Sheriff John McGinness.

Deputy Lawrence Canfield, 43, was transported to San Juan Medical Center in Carmichael, where he was pronounced dead around 4 p.m. Canfield served on the Rancho Cordova police force staffed by the sheriff's department.

McGinness, who is a personal friend of the deputy's father, a retired sheriff's sergeant, said, "it's a horrible, horrible, tragic loss."

McGinness said several drivers stopped to help the officer until emergency personnel arrived.

Deputy killed in Rancho Cordova motorcycle wreck - Redding, CA
The death of a Sacramento County sheriff's deputy is being keenly felt here in the north state.

Deputy Lawrence Canfield, 43, who was killed Wednesday in a traffic wreck in Rancho Cordova, was a familiar face at the Big Bike Weekend celebrations in Redding.

"Our hearts go out to his family," said a saddened Connie Grinols, chairwoman of the Big Bike Weekend's board of directors.

Redding Police Chief Peter Hansen, who met Canfield and his family last month during Big Bike Weekend festivities, said the deputy was outgoing and a wonderful representative of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

"He was a really nice guy," Hansen said.

Canfield, who was assigned to the Rancho Cordova Police Department's motorcycle unit, was killed while on duty when his motorcycle collided with a car on Coloma Road, a spokeswoman with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said Thursday. The car's driver was not injured.

Canfield was a 13-year veteran with the department and is survived by his wife and two children.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger released a statement Thursday expressing his condolences about Canfield's death and ordering that Capitol flags be flown at half-staff in his honor.

"Sheriff's Deputy Lawrence Canfield put his life on the line every day to protect the people of his community," Schwarzenegger said.

"We are thankful for his commitment to public safety and know that Rancho Cordova is a better place because of his service."

Grinols said that Canfield had friends in the north state and has participated for the past two years in Big Bike Weekend with his police motorcycle team.

"They were one of the first ones to sign up" for the competition, she said.

During last month's Big Bike Weekend police motorcycle competition, Canfield individually won second place in the BMW 1200 Class, and he and his motorcycle team also grabbed a second and third place in two other categories, she said....     Read the full story.
